A group of institutions led the recovery of Oppression Monument who gave birth 50 years ago and Alfredo Castañeda Arturo Alape.
8 and 9 June 1954 shook the country. In Bogotá, during a demonstration Twelve students were killed by the army which defended the dictatorship of General Rojas Pinilla.
These terrible events have shocked a young student in Cali. Was 20 and Carlos Ruiz was called , the same that years later would be known by the pseudonym Arturo Alape, for his writings on the violence in Colombia.
Obsessed with the idea to pay tribute to those students who fell under the yoke dictactorial, Ruiz promoted the creation of a monument to remember that historical fact. For this he was supported by his friend, the sculptor Alfredo Castañeda. On a rocky surface
three meters were carved by Castaneda figures of a mother cradling a student, and with them appear a worker. One of the hands of women holding up the head gracefully military. The work was entitled Monument to the Oppression. Alape
chose as the final destination of the work in the rugged hill of Siloam, a place that was settled then, in an open struggle against authority, by individuals who were displaced from other regions. The sculpture became a witness of their daily lives.
Locals say some romantic couples took advantage of some cracks that were opened in the sculpture to enter inside and express fully their feelings. This is why claim that many of its inhabitants were bred under the protective shadow.
