A group of institutions led the recovery of Oppression Monument who gave birth 50 years ago and Alfredo Castañeda Arturo Alape.
8 and 9 June 1954 shook the country. In Bogotá, during a demonstration Twelve students were killed by the army which defended the dictatorship of General Rojas Pinilla.
These terrible events have shocked a young student in Cali. Was 20 and Carlos Ruiz was called , the same that years later would be known by the pseudonym Arturo Alape, for his writings on the violence in Colombia.
Obsessed with the idea to pay tribute to those students who fell under the yoke dictactorial, Ruiz promoted the creation of a monument to remember that historical fact. For this he was supported by his friend, the sculptor Alfredo Castañeda. On a rocky surface
three meters were carved by Castaneda figures of a mother cradling a student, and with them appear a worker. One of the hands of women holding up the head gracefully military. The work was entitled Monument to the Oppression. Alape
chose as the final destination of the work in the rugged hill of Siloam, a place that was settled then, in an open struggle against authority, by individuals who were displaced from other regions. The sculpture became a witness of their daily lives.
Locals say some romantic couples took advantage of some cracks that were opened in the sculpture to enter inside and express fully their feelings. This is why claim that many of its inhabitants were bred under the protective shadow.

"More Better late than never, "said Castañeda Afredo sculptor, creator of the monument and who was responsible for its restoration. "One of the desires of Maestro Arturo Alape was able to restore it, unfortunately could not do when he was alive" he said.
Yesterday afternoon, at a special event in the vicinity of the work, presented the monument and restored. It was a simple ceremony dominated by the joy of children's orchestra, composed of the children of the sector.
They represented the hope and faith that new generations keep this space as an icon of the city.
Castaneda recalled that when they devised the project lived with Alape in the neighborhood Libertadores. "With a group of enthusiastic students of the Universidad del Valle and Santa Librada, brought parts of the sculpture and we set amid many difficulties.
